The 2007 Bolton Mountain Fun Run 50K

Run Recap
What a fantastic run and an amazing effort by absolutely everyone who participated! 50K of super-hilly and rugged terrain... and it was hot, very HOT. I’m not sure I’ve personally pushed as long and hard in that level of heat- in fact I’m certain I haven’t. I’m amazed that any of us finished the thing this year. What more can I say other than you are all a bunch of total badasses.

Despite the fact that about half the flagging had been taken down from the first half of the run, no one managed to get particularly lost (except, ironically, in one case where Jeff M. followed some red flagging that we hadn’t placed). The two bag drops managed to be exactly in the right places for most of us. Many thanks are due to Nancy, Flynn and Phoebe for sitting in the hot sun all day waiting for us to come in.

Awards
Considering the great efforts everyone made on the run yesterday, I thought it would be appropriate that I give out awards. Note that each award title is a hyperlink...

The Sir Ernest Shackleton Award
Given to Jeff Mogielnicki for his beyond-epic run which included: missing a critical turn and running north on the Long Trail to the summit of Bolton Mountain and beyond (taking on extra miles and significant elevation) before turning around, making another wrong turn miles later, bushwhacking, running through extreme heat and a hellish electrical storm which took out power in much of the county.

Golden Retriever Award
Given to Mike Goodhart for running up ahead, stopping, running back to let us catch up and running ahead again; running with Mike was like running with a big friendly dog. Though clearly qualified to keep the company of Tim Vile in the front of the pack, Mike held back and provided excellent conversation and a major morale boost to Eric and I throughout the run. His pacing was invaluable for me in the last four miles- thanks Mike! Clearly this event was too easy for you…

The Joey Chestnut Award
Awarded to Eric Remick for the amazing gastronomical feat of eating curries and Pakistani food at the bag drops. From what I could tell, Eric apparently emptied out his fridge of random leftovers when packing his drop bags. Hopefully Eric won’t be experiencing any “involuntary runs” on the next 48 hours.

Probably a more deserving award would have recognized the fact that Eric finished very strong despite the fact that this was by far his longest trail run ever. Nice job Eric!

The Polytetrafluoroethylene award
Otherwise known as Teflon, PTFE is often used to coat non-stick frying pans as it has very low friction and high heat resistance. This award is deservedly given to Tim Vile who smoked everyone's ass and ran a great time in the UGLY heat. The rest of us had a lot of fun running in your wake. You hold the course record at 6:58- nice work!

The Captain Ahab Award
Given to Jeff LaBossiere for feats of maniacal commitment in the face of debilitating injury. Despite no longer having two good legs after mile 6, Jeff perused the Bolton Mountain White Whale to Bolton Mountain Road at mile 12. Put some ice on that ankle Jeff and good luck in the VT 50!

Finishing Times
Timothy Vile - 6:58
Mike Goodhart - 8:02
Travis Peckham - 8:02
Eric Remick - 8:06
Jeff Mogielnicki - 9:39
Jeff LeBossiere - DNF (injury)

Thank you all for coming- it was a fun day, despite the heat, and I hope we’ll all get to run again soon!

Hi Travis! I work with Annie and she told me that you like to run. My partner and I just moved here from Missouri where I ran a lot of ultras with the St. Louis Ultrarunners Group. Annie said that you know of a 9-mile easy loop behind the Underhill Elementary School. I wanted to get more info. about that trail from you. And maybe we could run together sometime!
