The Bolton Mountain Fun Run 50K

Saturday, August 25th, 2007, 7:00 AM, Richmond, Vermont

The second running of the Bolton Mountain Fun Run 50K will take place on August 25th. The 'Fun Run is an incredible summertime link-up of hiking, skiing and snowmobiling trails going from Richmond Village to Bolton ridge- and back again. Needless to say, the course is hilly and covers over 8000' of elevation gain / loss.

The Course

The course starts at the Camel's Hump Middle school. After running a short distance up Brown's Trace, the VAST trail breaks off steeply and continues rolling for about 6K to Stage road and then Bolton Notch road at 10K. This section passes through the Preston Pond conservation area and is beautiful.

The trail then crosses Notch Road on the VAST and continues steeply over a low shoulder of Bolton Ridge and dropping down to the Bolton Mountain Access road. From here pick up the Catamount cross-country ski trail until it joins Broadway at the Bolton Nordic center. After a long uphill run leads to Bolton Mountain Village, followed by a steep climb to Bryant Camp, Raven's Wind and the Long Trail. The Long Trail South is then followed back down across Bolton Notch road. A final significant climb up "Unnessecary Ridge" finally eases off and the Long Trail heads down to the bottom of Stage road.

After crossing the Jonesville Bridge, take an immediate right through a field and wade across the Huntington River to join the Richmond River Trail. Follow the River Trail, with several brief sections of road running, back acrosss the Winooski to the finish at Volunteer's Green in Richmond. Limp up the hill to The Bridge Street Grill and have Switchback!

Aid

The course has no aid stations and is entirely self-supported. We will coordinate two bag drops- more on this as the day arrives.

Official Timing

Official timing will be provided by you and your watch- be honest. The start is at 7AM at the Camel's Hump Middle school and the finish is the parking lot at Volunteers Green. Please send us your times after the run and we'll put them on the web page.

Important Disclaimer

This is a very hard course; please do not participate if you've never run very long distances on trails. The idea of running a marathon should not seem especially daunting. This is, after all, 31 miles.

The course will not be swept; running with a partner until at least the 40K mark on Unnecessary Ridge is encouraged. The run is not an officially sanctioned event by anyone; we are simply independent runners doing the same run on the same day. While the course follows well a well-established public trail network it does cross private lands in several locations in the first 15K. None of these properties are marked with "No Trespassing" signs, however, we have not tried to get the explicit permission of any land owners. The course also tackles sections of the Long Trail. Please respect the fact that you are essentially an uninvited guest on all sections of the course.

2007 "Registered" Participants

This year's race will be limited to 10 runners. Frankly, more than that would be too hard to manage without significant effort on our part. This is supposed to be fun, right? Please do not register unless you're serious about participating.
