The 2007 Bolton Mountain Fun Run 50K

Image
Run Recap What a fantastic run and an amazing effort by absolutely everyone who participated! 50K of super-hilly and rugged terrain... and it was hot, very HOT. I’m not sure I’ve personally pushed as long and hard in that level of heat- in fact I’m certain I haven’t. I’m amazed that any of us finished the thing this year. What more can I say other than you are all a bunch of total badasses. Despite the fact that about half the flagging had been taken down from the first half of the run, no one managed to get particularly lost (except, ironically, in one case where Jeff M. followed some red flagging that we hadn’t placed). The two bag drops managed to be exactly in the right places for most of us. Many thanks are due to Nancy, Flynn and Phoebe for sitting in the hot sun all day waiting for us to come in. Awards Considering the great efforts everyone made on the run yesterday, I thought it would be appropriate that I give out awards. Note that each award title is a hyperlink... The Sir E...

Saturday, August 25th, 2007, 7:00 AM, Richmond, Vermont The second running of the Bolton Mountain Fun Run 50K will take place on August 25th. The 'Fun Run is an incredible summertime link-up of hiking, skiing and snowmobiling trails going from Richmond Village to Bolton ridge- and back again. Needless to say, the course is hilly and covers over 8000' of elevation gain / loss. Right-click here and 'Save Target As...' for 3D GoogleEarth map The Course The course starts at the Camel's Hump Middle school. After running a short distance up Brown's Trace, the VAST trail breaks off steeply and continues rolling for about 6K to Stage road and then Bolton Notch road at 10K. This section passes through the Preston Pond conservation area and is beautiful. The trail then crosses Notch Road on the VAST and continues steeply over a low shoulder of Bolton Ridge and dropping down to the Bolton Mountain Access road. From here pick up the Catamount cross-country ski trail until...

The Marshall Hike

Chasing the Ghost of Bob Marshall in the Adirondacks    Thus I have carried a little farther the fantastic pastime of record climbing, adding three to Malcolm’s total of eleven. Perhaps within a few weeks, surely as soon as a few more mountains in the vicinity of Mount Marcy have trails cut on them, someone will readily enough overtop my record. Certainly it is a mark which any reasonably vigorous person in good physical condition can equal if he tries it when there are long daylight hours. In fact, it would fit perfectly in a class with flagpole sitting and marathon dancing as an entirely useless type of record, made only to be broken, were it not that I had such a thoroughly glorious time out of the entire day. Robert Marshall, 1932 After hours of unsuccessfully trying to get some rest, getting up at 3:00AM was more of a relief than an imposition. My excitement, and the anticipation of the hike, made my sleep little more than lying in my tent wondering if it was time to ...

The First Annual Bolton Mountain Fun Run

As a finale to the trail running season, Dan and I decided to squeeze in one more long run: a long-awaited attempt to tackle our twisted brainchild, the Bolton Mountain Fun Run. The Fun Run is an incredible link up of snowmobile, hiking and back country ski trails running from Richmond village to the top of Bolton ridge- and back again. We had originally planned to organize the run as an official race, but both of us have been too busy with our families, work, and procrastinating to manage the logistics. Anyway, this year’s run was an “unofficial invitational,” which basically means that I sent my friend Nick an email the night before to see if he would join us. He was busy. Dan had to drop his son off at daycare in the morning so we weren’t able to get an “alpine start.” I used the extra time to sleep in a bit and drop a couple of cache bags. I dropped one bag at Rich’s house- roughly at mile seven of the course; the other I hid behind a rock on the far side of the Winooski River. Our...

Welcome!

This is for the love of trails... And when I say trails I mean all trails, in the broadest sense; whether for mountain biking, rock climbing, snowboarding, skiing, trail running, or whatever; finding a path and an experience in the outdoors is the essence of the thing... Nearly fifteen years of exploring have preceded today's post, and I regret that there have been many experiences that I've not captured in writing. This is a new beginning and a commitment to documenting my experience. Maintaining my own dwindling memories is the true goal but, if anything here is of interest, then I look forward to sharing inspiration and challenges.
